UK accolade for local engineering company

Larne-based FG Wilson has won a major UK manufacturing award in London.

The engineering outfit picked up the ‘Process Innovation’ award in the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Manufacturing Excellence awards 2002. The ImechE awards recognised are to be the industry’s leading awards scheme, thus outshining many of the UK’s premier manufacturing companies.

John Ling, IMechE Technical Manager said: "The winner of the ‘Process Innovation’ category must be able to show that it has innovative controlled processes that give it an edge over competitors.”

“FG Wilson successfully embraced the 6 Sigma methodology of improving processes, which other entrants have done, but they managed to embed them in the thinking of their people. They stood out from the others because of the distance and improvement they have made in such a short time - all down to getting their people on side."

The award was presented to FG Wilson Managing Director, Mark Sweeney, at a prize giving ceremony in the Intercontinental Hotel, London, on June 26.

Mr Sweeney said: "We are absolutely delighted to be named as one of the winners in these prestigious awards. It is a tremendous tribute to the talent and commitment of our people, and to the company's commitment to continuous improvement, that our manufacturing excellence has been recognised on a national level. It is further evidence of our status as a world class manufacturing company."

The IMechE Awards have a range of six categories, and assess companies on their innovative work practices, competitive business nature, and ultimately excellence in their field of manufacturing.

The awards are presented to companies from throughout the UK who have consistently endeavoured to improve their business through enterprise, initiative and focus.
