Political Vacuum Risks Dissident Activity: Orde

Ulster’s top cop has urged the power-sharing Executive to overcome differences and work to "marginalise dissident republicans".

Chief Constable Hugh Orde said that a political vacuum had been left in the wake of ongoing governmental strife at Stormont, which he claimed dissidents are attempting to exploit.

Mr Orde said this situation had increased the threat against his officers.

The police chief's comments came after yesterday’s stalled Executive meeting.

Sinn Fein blocked the cabinet talks in protest at delays in devolving policing and justice powers to the local Assembly.

Despite a push from Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday, the DUP has continued to insist the power sharing government is not ready for increased autonomy.

First Minister and DUP Party Leader Peter Robinson had warned of "serious consequences" if the Executive failed to meet.

However, talks were held between the DUP, SDLP and UUP.

Ministers Reg Empey, Michael McGimpsey and Margaret Ritchie spoke to the press after the meeting, and stressed the importance of issues they had added to the agenda, including fuel poverty schemes and suicide strategies.

Sinn Féin again demanded proof that the Executive would operate "on the basis of true partnership".

Ms Ritchie came under particular criticism from the party, who questioned her commitment to power sharing, as a nationalist minister.
