New committee to oversee EU funding
A new committee has just been established to monitor the EU funded Interreg III Programme which will invest €179 million into Northern Ireland and the border region of the Republic.
The EU programme aims to assist economic development and address issues such as economic isolation and poor infrastructure in the area.
The new committee is to be chaired by John McKinney, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body.
Explaining the role of his team and the terms of reference for the Monitoring Committee he said: "The role of the new committee is to oversee the implementation of the 'Ireland/Northern Ireland Interreg III A community Initiative Programme'.
"They agree the criteria for selecting projects and monitor the progress and assess the programme's achievement in developing the economies and improving conditions and infrastructure for local communities in the area."
The Committee consists of representatives of the two Member States and the following sectors: Community and Voluntary Sector; Agriculture and Rural Development; Trades Unions; Private Sector; Regional and Local Administration; Border Corridor Groups and Equality and Environment Organisations.
At the first meeting of the Committee, there was a discussion on the plans for the new programme and the way forward over the next five years.

Over £166k Awarded To Community Groups
Community groups in the Lisburn & Castlereagh area have benefited from over £166,000 through the council's Community Support Grant Scheme. Organisations can put the money towards their running and programme costs, through the initiative that fosters a partnership between the local community and the council.

DDDA Bill Reports Criticised
Claims regarding a €600,000 travel bill run up by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) have been described as "an orgy of spending". A report in the Irish Independent has accused the DDDA of spending large sums on luxury travel, expensive means and fine wines.

Major economic boost for mid-Tyrone
Business optimism in County Tyrone received a welcome boost in the form of the official opening of a new high specification Engineering Unit in Carrickmore. Funded by the EU Peace Programme, the new facility will provide much-appreciated support to the local economy with the associated creation of 20 new jobs.
