Security increased at Newtownabbey cemetery
Security is to be tightened at a Newtownabbey cemetery following the desecration of nearly 30 graves last weekend.
Councillors in Newtownabbey met on Monday night to consider how the attacks at Carnmoney cemetery could be stopped.
The latest attack came on Friday night when nearly 30 graves, all believed to be Catholic, were vandalised.
The council has since employed a security firm to patrol the cemetery and are trying to speed up the strengthening of the cemetery’s perimeter fence.
The cemetery on the outskirts of north Belfast has been vandalised twice in the past fortnight.
There was also an attack in May on the grave of Catholic postman Daniel McColgan, 20, who was murdered by the Red Hand defenders - a nom de guerre for the Ulster Defence Association - as he arrived for work in January 2002.
A spokesman for the council said the decision by all council members present at Mondays’ meeting to condemn the desecration of the graves was unanimous.
The council also said they had received an assurance from the police they would step up their security in the area.
