Loyalists blamed for east Belfast pipebomb attack

Five people have escaped injury after a pipebomb was thrown at a house in east Belfast.

The device exploded at the rear of a house in Bryson Court in the nationalist Short Strand area around 1am this morning.

East Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Joe O’Donnell said the attack was orchestrated by loyalists.

The police said a man, woman and three children aged between nine and 14 were in the house at the time of the attack.

The police have said only minor damage was caused to the property and have appealed for information on the attack.

“This device was clearly designed to kill and it is fortunate that nobody was badly injured or killed,” Mr O’Donnell said.

“This attack is part of the ongoing loyalists siege of the Short Strand. This must end and people must be allowed to get on with their normal lives.”
