Fire Escapes

There have been two lucky escapes in separate fires in the North West.

A mother whose home in Londonderry was targeted in an arson attack has said her family is lucky to be alive.

The Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property in the Glen Estate at about 3am on Sunday.

Julie McCartney, who lives in the house with her newborn baby and boyfriend, said they would have been killed had they been at home at the time as she thinks they would have been trapped - given the location of the fire.

Also in Derry, a fire which began in a kitchen has led to two men having to be rescued from their house.

The men, one in his 40s, the other in his 20s - who both refused to go to hospital - were rescued by the Fire Brigade at 6am on Sunday at Colmcille Court in the Bogside.

A smoke alarm in the premises wasn't working, therefore giving the occupants no warning of the blaze.

However, the alarm was raised by neighbours who saw smoke and called the emergency services.
