Committee to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station

A delegation from the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment is to visit Coolkeeragh Power Station on Friday 5 July 2002.

Committee Chairperson Pat Doherty will lead the delegation of assembly members to visit the new station in order to learn more about the project.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Doherty said: “The Committee was delighted to accept an invitation from Coolkeeragh Power Limited to visit their facilities and to learn more about the development of a new power station in the North West which the Committee recommended in its Energy Inquiry Report should proceed.”

The new Coolkeeragh project involves a 400 megawatt combined cycle gas turbine power station, scheduled to be commissioned, during 2004.

A separate project to construct a pipeline which will bring natural gas from Belfast to the North West by 2004 has received financial commitment from both the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland Governments.

The power station construction effort will cost £150 million, with 600 workers needed at the peak of its construction. Site preparation and demolition work commenced at the start of June, with the major construction effort beginning in September. (MB)
