Blast Bomb Hurled In Fresh Street Violence

Just hours after violence erupted in east and south Belfast - with roads in the Markets area of the city closed to traffic for a time last night due to rioting - one blast bomb, as well as bottles, stones and petrol bombs have been thrown at police investigating a security alert in Co Armagh.

Police said they came under attack this morning from youths in the Tullygally and Drumbeg areas of Craigavon.

No one has been injured so far, but several police vehicles have been damaged.

A police spokesman had earlier urged members of the public to be vigilant following a telephoned bomb warning on Monday, as a PSNI search yielded nothing.

He has also advised that as the trouble is ongoing, motorists should avoid the area.

Meanwhile, after continued unrest in Londonderry, it has been claimed that dissident republicans are "paying young people to carry out attacks".

That is according to DUP MLA, William Hay, who said: "They're paying people as young as 14 and 15 to carry out attacks.

His comments came days after a Londonderry woman was threatened by dissident republicans who mistakenly believed she was in the PSNI.

A woman was hounded from her home with a death threat over her head after a case of mistaken identity.

Lisa Daly has been in hiding since the PSNI warned her that dissident republicans were plotting a lethal attack, because of a mix-up with a policewoman.

The Londonderry woman, 25, arrived at her Copperthorpe estate home in Drumahoe on Friday night to be told by police officers that as she shared her name with the officer it could have serious consequences.

Also in Derry, a man was knocked down by a car and then beaten by so-called joyriders in Londonderry in July has said he will not be intimidated by the unruly element.

Joe Gallagher was attacked after he challenged the gang near his home in the Shantallow area.

He suffered leg injuries and doctors had to insert a steel plate into his leg.
