Twelve arrested after Drumcree riots

The number of people arrested following Sunday afternoon’s vicious attacks on police officers following the Orange Order service at Drumcree Parish Church now stands at twelve.

Ten have appeared in court charged with a number of public order offences ranging from riotous assembly to intimidation.

Eight were remanded in custody. Three of these applied for bail at the High Court in Belfast today and were refused.

Police said they expected to make even further arrests.

Police have already identified a number of people involved and are confident that more will be identified.

The police commander responsible for the Drumcree security operation Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White said: “I am delighted with the response that we have received so far from the public. A number of people have contacted us with names of those involved. I have no doubt that there others will be identified and have to pay the price.

“It is the duty of everyone who claims to have respect for the law and for human life and who knows or recognises anyone involved in the riot to contact police immediately so that those responsible can be brought before the courts.”
