Empey makes appeals for calm to safeguard jobs

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey, has appealed to "locally elected representatives and the wider community" of north Belfast to help stop further sectarian violence that could threaten the future of major employer TeleTech.

Sir Reg said: “My concern must be to ensure that the company, which currently employs approximately 300 people, receives the support of the entire community to continue to develop its business and meet customer needs.

“My appeal to locally elected representatives and the wider community is to do all in their power to ensure that nothing happens that could have a detrimental effect on further investments in the area."

The Duncairn Gardens-based call centre has been dogged by sectarian violence in the area for the past two years. It was officially opened in August 2000 with more than £11 million in government funding and the promise of up to 1,000 jobs.

At present the call centre, which provides a 24-hour customer call service for some of the world's best-known companies, employs 300 workers.

The Minister's comment's followed calls by UUP assembly member Fred Cobain and the MP for North Belfast Nigel Dodds that action be taken to ensure that Teletech does not close as a result of the trouble in the interface area.

Teletech have already sought assurances from the Minister that their staff will be safe before the company seeks to recruit in larger numbers.
