Figures Confirm Irish Employment Still Falling

The latest figures from the CSO show the Republic of Ireland's unemployment rate has risen again, leading some to suggest the economic downturn is worsening.

According to the Central Statistics Office, the employment rate has fallen from 4.8% to 5.1% in the second quarter of this year, with 115,500 people unemployed in the second quarter, an increase of more than 15,000 over the previous 12 months.

Fine Gael Deputy Leader & Finance Spokesman Richard Bruton TD said rise in unemployment revealed the economic downturn is gaining pace.

"These figures show the extremely rapid deterioration in the economy that has occurred since March with employment down 26,600 in one quarter. Full time employment has declined consistently this year for the first time since the 1980s,” said the minister.

He added: "This Government is doing nothing to restore confidence and showing no sign of being willing to take the decisions necessary to get the economy back on track. Serious questions are now being asked as to whether the Government understands the scale of the problem.”

The continuing rise in unemployment is believed to be due to be heavily weighted by the falling construction sector. According to the CSO’s report employment in the construction industry decreased by 15.2% in June 2008 in comparison with June

2007. The monthly employment index also decreased over the same period.
