Republicans blamed for attacks on CCTV cameras
Republicans have been blamed after Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) were damaged in east Belfast.
The security cameras, which were sited at the sectarian interface areas at Madrid Street and Albertbridge Road, were targeted on Wednesday evening. In a follow-up operation in the area police also seized more than 20 petrol bombs and bottles filled with paint.
The attacks in east Belfast followed a similar incident on a security camera in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast on Tuesday night. In both cases, the cameras had been set up after serious sectarian clashes.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that the Ardoyne camera had been hit by "high-velocity gunfire". At around the same time, an attempt was made to set fire to the camera by nationalists in the area.
Nationalists have held protests against CCTV cameras recently and Sinn Fein have described the cameras as "spy posts". Party representatives also dismissed PSNI claims that the CCTV installations will be instrumental in cracking down on interface violence in the area.
However, Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan has defended the positioning of the cameras saying they would benefit the entire community.
