Petrol Pump Lottery Slammed
There has been a call for supermarket petrol prices to be equalised across the whole of Northern Ireland.
The Northern Ireland Consumer Council has slammed the fuel pricing policy of two supermarkets and has called on Tesco and Sainsbury's to scrap their local pricing policy - which they said charges more for petrol depending on location.
Consumers in Ballymena and Belfast are paying more than those in Bangor or Coleraine and in some cases it is costing as much as £2.50 more per fill.
The Council's Eleanor Gill said the supermarkets were not playing fair.
"Tesco and Sainsbury's must stop this punishing local pricing and play fair by all consumers," she said.
"A Tesco customer in Banbridge or Dungannon is being charged £2.50 more each time they fill their tank than a Tesco customer in Bangor.
"Sainsbury's do the same - charging customers in Forestside or Lisburn more than customers in Coleraine.
"The Consumer Council believes that this practice is blatantly unfair," Ms Gill said, adding that Asda is offered the same price to all consumers.
The statement said that the other supermarkets should explain why the pricing of petrol is different from that of food, where customers pay the same price for eggs and milk, irrespective of where they live.
In a statement, Tesco said they checked their petrol prices against those of their competitors: "We are confident that the local customer is getting a great deal on fuel," they said in a statement.
"Tesco does not operate a national price...we endeavour to be competitive on petrol and diesel in the local catchment area for each store."

700 Tesco Drivers To Vote On Strike Action
Over 700 Tesco drivers at distribution hubs in Belfast and Doncaster are to ballot for strike action next week over a pay dispute. The firm announced a pay offer of 0 per cent for 2015 and 1.5 per cent for 2016. The strike vote follows a 91 per cent rejection of the pay offer across the three sites.

Hundreds of construction jobs are expected to be created following full planning approval for a new Tesco superstore. The store will be situated in Newtownards, north Down, on the site of the old Ards Abattoir off the Portaferry Road. The project, which includes a petrol station and parking spaces, will result in the creation of 200 retail jobs.
