Investigation launched after newborn baby found dead

Gardaí have launched an investigation after the body of a newborn baby was discovered near a beach in the Dublin area.

The baby was found in the Ringsend area by a passer-by at around 4pm on Sunday. The infant – who is female – had been wrapped in a towel and placed inside a holdall, and did not appear to have been born premature.

Gardaí have issued a call for further information, and have stressed that they are concerned for the welfare of the mother. Superintendent Gerry Phillips added: "She obviously needs medical attention and we would ask her to contact us or to contact a hospital."

A post-mortem examination is currently being carried out, although police have said there were no obvious signs of a violent death.
