Printing Company Announces Job Losses
More jobs are being lost as the finishing and bindery factory at Polestar Greaves gets ready to close its remaining Scarborough plant.
The move follows the earlier closure of the printing company itself - which meant the demise of almost 200 jobs.
The finishing plant had remained open since then - although when the firm itself closed in April - 190 staff lost their jobs.
Now Polestar Greaves has revealed that the remaining site is no longer needed after the company invested in new technology.
Therefore a further 190 people will lose their jobs when the factory shuts in January.
Catherine Hearn, Chief Operating Officer, said: "The Ferag finishing lines we have acquired recently give us opportunity to relocate finishing from Greaves to our other print sites, thereby improving efficiency and reducing transportation."
The finishing department was used to bind and wrap magazines for publishers including Telegraph, Bauer, News International, Observer, IPC and Express.
Tony Burke, the union Unite's Assistant Secretary General, said that the closure came as "no surprise".
"This closure represents another hammer blow to the print and packaging industry which is already reeling from the closures of Curtis and Beith and the announced job cuts at Sappi and Johnston Press," he said.
It is understood the firm has begun a period of consultation with local union representatives.

Corus 'To Axe 366 Jobs'
Steelmaker Corus is believed to be axing 366 jobs at its Scunthorpe site in North East England. The company has said that it has "announced proposals to improve the competitiveness of its Scunthorpe site by aligning costs with anticipated steel demand". Consultations with employees and their representatives have begun on the site today.

Wexford closure leads to engineering job losses
Wexford-based Pierce's Engineering is to close with the loss of more than 40 jobs. The company has been in negotiations with staff for the last five months over compensation for relocation to a nearby site, but employees recently voted to reject a pay offer recommended by the Labour Court.
