£1.2m 'Landmark' Wind Turbine For UU
A £1.2m wind turbine generator is to be erected this week at the University of Ulster's Coleraine campus, as part of a 'landmark' development.
It will be built on a site adjacent to the playing fields at the north east side of the campus.
The wind turbine generator has been supplied by German manufacturer Enercon and will stand 55 metres tall to the top of its hub, with a blade radius of 24 metres.
The Coleraine campus has a large annual electricity bill - currently circa £600,000 - that is set to rise in line with current market increases.
The new turbine should reduce campus electricity costs by around a quarter, and pay for itself in approximately five years.
The generator will annually supply approximately 2,000MWHr of electricity and result in a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions at local power stations of 860 tonnes.
The electricity it will generate is equivalent to that used by 425 homes.
Frank Liddle, Deputy Director of Physical Resources, said: "The project is a landmark development for the University and provides a physical demonstration of the University's commitment to sustainability."

Minister announces £30m electricity initiative
Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson has announced plans to invest £30 million in a new initiative aimed at reducing electricity bills for Northern Ireland's businesses. It is hoped that the funding, which is part of a draft budget, will help businesses save 10% on their electricity bills.

Strangford Lough Turbine Stalls
Northern Ireland's much anticipated world-first tidal turbine, on Strangford Lough, has hit a glitch. Described as a 'minor hiccup', the fault occurred the day after last Thursday's launch. A Seagen programming problem resulted in one of the blades sustaining damage.

Strangford Lough Turbine Plan Powers Ahead
One of Northern Ireland's most scenic areas is soon to become a 'powerhouse' with revised plans now at an advanced stage to run an underwater electricity turbine. Strangford Lough, which has one of the fastest tidal flows in the world, is to be home for the SeaGen marine turbine, will produce energy for 1,000 homes when it becomes operational.

Co Antrim Wind Turbine Stalled
The NI Planning Service has still made no decision on an application by a Co Antrim manufacturer to construct a massive wind turbine at its Roughfort Road headquarters. People living near Mallusk plastics company Brett Martin have objected to the firm's plan, raising concerns about the sheer scale of the proposal.
