180 Pfizer Jobs To Go In Cork
Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is to shed 180 Cork jobs after failing to find a buyer for one of its five Irish manufacturing plants.
During the past year and a half the firm has attempted to sell its Little Island facility under the terms of a going concern, in order to hold onto workers.
But a deal, being discussed last month, stumbled, and now the firm is set to close its facility by the end of 2009.
Pfizer expressed its efforts to pursue every possible avenue to avoid this outcome, however, all opportunities to find a buyer have been exhausted.
Phased layoff will begin from October.
Company spokesman Paul Duffy thanked local and central government for their efforts in resolving the issues, but said this was ultimately a sad day for everyone concerned.
Despite finding a number of interested parties, Mr Duffy explained that none of the proposals for the plant had proved feasible.
The firm is continuing to source a buyer for another Ringaskiddy based plant, where around 300 people are currently employed.
Pfizer cited the abandonment of plans to produce a new anti-cholesterol drug called Torcebrapib at Ringasiddy in 2006 as the major reason for closing Ringaskiddy plant in 2007, resulting in 65 jobs losses.
It also attributed this issue to the selling of two Cork facilities.
