Carpet Firm Weaving Magic With Energy Bills
A Northern Ireland carpet producer has slashed its fuel bill by three quarters of a million pounds in the last year - simply by implementing energy-saving systems.
Portadown-based Ulster Carpets has said it saved around £750,000 amidst the spiraling turmoil of international energy markets.
The firm managed to reduce fuel costs while still generating a profit.
The energy needed to make one square metre of carpet has been cut by almost half (49%), according to Ulster Carpets, who employs over 400 people.
The key to the firm's success has been recovering heat generated from steam used in the dying process and from dye house waste.
Company Managing Director, Nick Coburn, said: "Energy efficiency is not just good for the environment, it is also good for the bottom line.
"At a time when fuel costs have soared, our unit cost has gone down substantially over the past five years, helping us to make more profit."

Consumer Council calls for action on energy costs
The General Consumer Council today called for action to cut energy costs in the province following the publication of consultation on the government’s New Energy Strategy for Northern Ireland. The Chairman of the Consumer Council, Steve Costello, said that the single biggest issue facing energy consumers was the "high price" of services.

SDLP Calls For Fuel Assistance To Be Extended To Working People
The SDLP has called for support for working people who are experiencing fuel poverty. The party's Communities Spokesperson Mark H Durkan called on Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey to also provide support for working people experiencing fuel poverty, after the Executive signed off on a £200 payment to help people in receipt of benefits.
