Axe Falls On 200 Irish Jobs

Almost 200 jobs will be going soon as pressures on Irish business and the economy mounts.

Dublin and the Midlands will be most affected by the losses, which have been pinned on the ongoing economic downturn.

Up to 50 Dublin jobs could go if a plan by the Canadian pharmaceutical company Biovail to close its Citywest plant goes ahead.

A meeting between employees and management at the Citywest plant is will take place before a final decision is made.

Research and development is carried out at the plant, which mainly employs scientists and engineers.

The Midlands region are also facing the prospect of losing 50 jobs as the Wright Windows System factory in Milltownpass considers redundancy packages for its 150 staff.

Workers return in August after the summer break to hear of their fate.

Whilst severe competition has resulted in job losses for 96 workers at Nexans, an electrical cable manufacture, in Athlone, Co Westmeath.

To further demoralise the clamouring economy, figures released on Thursday by the Central Statistics Office have shown the price of goods leaving factory gates was down 2.2% in the year to June.

The statistics will put heavy pressure on the already stuggling manufacturing sector as the economy fights to get onto its feet.
