HSENI issue warning over forklift death
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has issued a warning to all employers about the safe operation of forklift trucks, following the death of a 24 year-old employee in a workplace accident.
Speaking about the incident, which occurred yesterday, HSENI Chief Inspector, John Francey, said: "The circumstances surrounding this particular accident are under investigation and HSENI is unable to comment further upon this particular case other than to offer our sympathy to the family concerned.
"Tragically, this accident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can be encountered when operating forklift trucks. I would urge all employers to review all vehicle operations on their premises, ensuring that they are properly planned and managed. Employers need to make sure that only trained and authorised drivers use forklift trucks and that truck operations are well-planned and adequately supervised. Trucks should be well-maintained and regularly inspected by a competent person."
During the last six years, ten people have lost their lives as a result of fatal accidents involving forklift trucks in Northern Ireland, and the HSENI produce a code of practice – "Rider Operated Lift Trucks – Operator Training" which lists the legal training requirements which apply to the use of such equipment.
HSENI's free helpline service - 0800 032 0121 – also provides an advisory service for customers who have queries over health and safety in the workplace, if necessary, on a confidential basis.
