Divers Alert

There have been two dramatic escapes from life-threatening danger over the weekend.

Yesterday, a major operation took place to locate two divers reported missing on a dive to the west of Rathlin Island, while in Co Tyrone, a woman was forced to jump from the window of a first-floor flat after an arson attack.

The Portrush lifeboat began a search in an area off the Co Antrim coast after a boatman lost contact with the divers on Sunday afternoon as a substantial search operation was mobilised.

The search for the divers concentrated in the region of several shipwrecks to the west of the island which is a popular diving site.

However, they later managed to reach the base of cliffs below a lighthouse and were taken to safety.

They managed to reach the base of a cliff and were picked by the Sligo-based rescue helicopter.

Portrush lifeboat which began the search was also joined by HMS Exploit, which had been patrolling off the coast of Scotland.

In Moygashel, near Dungannon, the woman jumped from the window of her first-floor flat after an arson attack.

A fire was started in a wheelie bin at the bottom of the staircase of the flats in Moygashel Court and was reported at about 2.45am on Saturday.

The Fire and Rescue Service said the woman occupant and her boyfriend, who they rescued, had a lucky escape.
