Drunk Driver's 'Unduly Lenient' Sentence Increased
An 18-year-old drunk driver who was jailed for four years for killing two men has had his sentence increased, after the term was deemed "unduly lenient".
Christopher McGinn from Mountain View Villas, Camlough, was sent to a Young Offender's Centre after he ploughed into two cars on the Dublin Road in Newry in October 2006.
His sentence has been increased to seven years following the case's referral to the Court of Appeal.
A 44-year-old taxi driver from Newry, Stephen Shields, and Drumintee man Gerald Feron, aged 26 were both killed in the collision.
The then 16-year-old - who sustained a brain injury as a result of the crash - had bought the Toyota Carina car just hours before the crash for £200. He had been driving without a licence or insurance.
Two passengers who had been travelling with McGinn also sustained injuries.
In April of this year the teenager pleaded guilty to a number of counts relating to the crash, including two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol and without insurance.
He was handed the four-year sentence, and banned from driving for 10 years. However, his case was referred back to the Court of Appeal by the Attorney General amid anger at the length of the sentence.
