Limavady Man Escapes 70th Arson Attack

Rural Limavady in Co Londonderry is still being targeted by fire-raisers with attacks escalating this week.

A man was forced to put out a blaze at the back of his home following another arson attack in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He described how a coal bunker was set alight at the rear of the property on Collessan Walk, while an empty gas cylinder was also found nearby.

After a total of 70 deliberate fires have been started in Limavady since January 2007, the situation is becoming serious.

A meeting is therefore taking place between the local District Policing Partnership and senior police officers to discuss the recent arson attacks.

Michael Coyle, chair of Limavady District Policing Partnership, said someone could easily have been killed.

"They may not have gone with the intent to kill somebody, but to go to such an extent to set a coal bunker on fire and then a gas cylinder, it's almost like a bomb.

"In fact it is a bomb, which could have done an awful lot of damage to property, but more worryingly could have severely injured or killed somebody."

Fear already stalks the town where many residents are now living in terror of being burned alive in their homes.

There remain real concerns that arsonists will nbow continue to target private homes after the growing number of such incidents since the new year.
