£1.1m released for peace and reconciliation in rural areas
The Rural Development Council (RDC) has announced a £1.1 million investment in Northern Ireland's rural communities as part of the Peace II programme.
Speaking at Loughry College, the Agriculture Minister Brid Rodgers announced the 35 successful projects to benefit from this latest investment.
Ms Rodgers said: "All of the applicants have made tremendous efforts to bring forward projects that will contribute to peace building efforts in their own communities.
"This is by no means easy and it takes patience, vision and commitment to see projects to this stage. Along with the 35 successful groups an additional eight groups will receive development support to further develop their project ideas."
Also attending the launch, Chairman of the RDC, Joanna McVey, praised the groups for their dedication and effort.
She added: "The groups that have gained from the first round of the RDC's Peace II Programme range far and wide. From Cushendall to Crossmaglen and Belcoo to Newcastle, and linked to community arts, information technology, children's education facilities and the environment, these grants will support people of all ages and meet a wide range of local needs.
"We are proud of the help that we have been able to offer and regret that we were unable to support all the applications that we received. With a high level of over subscription we were forced to make some very tough decisions on what to fund. Our programme will open again in late Autumn and we would encourage all rural community groups to continue with their efforts to develop local peace and reconciliation projects."
The Rural Development Council (RDC), which was established in 1991, is an independent body representative of rural interests and is core funded by the Department of Agriculture as an integral part of the delivery structures for Government's Rural Development Programme (RDP).
