MLA Backs 'Help The Aged' Call

A leading charity, Help The Aged, has claimed that as many as one in seven pensioners in Northern Ireland are living in severe poverty - and an MLA representing one of Belfast's most deprived areas has added his voice to their call for action.

Their report, 'Spotlight on Older People in Northern Ireland', reveals one in four elderly people are merely 'surviving', by living below the poverty line.

They said that, worringly, up to half of those who are eligible are not claiming the benefits to which they are entitled to.

The Ulster branch of the national charity has urged the Stormont Executive to deal with the growing problem. Spokesman Duane Farrell said: "This report shines a harsh light on the poor quality of life being experienced by far too many pensioners in Northern Ireland.

"That older people at the start of the 21st century do not have enough money to live on is nothing short of a scandal."

The cost of electricity, oil and food has soared in recent months because of a global economic downturn, which is one of the major increasing costs involved.

Commenting on the news, DUP MLA for East Belfast, Robin Newton (pictured) said: "The plight of older persons living on fixed incomes when the costs of essestials such as food, heating and light is soaring unacceptable.

"The 'fat cat' speculators who are trading oil and gas supplies on the high seas and thereby pushing up the cost of living deserve to be condemned for their actions," he said.

"Those who are living on the bread line need support from all available sources, and a concerted campaign, to ensure they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to."
