High Hopes Of Peaceful Twelfth Celebration
There are high hopes of a peaceful day tomorrow as the traditional 12th July parades are being held against a new background of compromise.
Last weekend, Orangemen from throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland took part in their annual parade in Rossnowlagh, Co Donegal.
It drew several thousand lodge members from across NI and border counties Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan.
Also, for the 12th year in a row, hundreds of Orange Order members who took part in the annual Battle of the Somme commemoration church service at Drumcree Church in Portadown were banned from returning along a contentious route through a mainly nationalist area. However, there was no trouble.
More than a decade after post-Drumcree rioting resulted in a virtual shut-down of NI for year after year, the 2008 'annual impasse' passed off without incident - and with the smallest police presence to date.
Tomorrow will see thousands of Orangemen, bandsmen and spectators descend on various centres around NI to mark the 318th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.
Sixmilewater District LOL No. 10 greets the 2008 East Antrim Orange Combine parade, with members from Cloughfern, Carnmoney, Larne, Antrim, Staffordstown, Killead, Carrickfergus and Randalstown in attendance.
A total of 71 lodges, accompanied by bands from all over East Antrim and several visiting bands from Scotland, will take part in this year’s event.
The main speaker at the field will be the Rev Stephen Dickinson, Deputy Grand Chaplain of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.
By way of a new initiative on making the event a 'family-friendly' day for all, the field will include entertainment for children, a large variety of stalls and a concert celebrating the Faith and Witness of the Covenanters.
Those taking part will include the Calvary Quartet gospel group and Ulster Scots folk group The Grouse Beaters.
The return parade, which will pass through Ollardale and along the Doagh Road, will leave the field at 3.15pm.
The PSNI have advised that traffic controls will be in place around Ballyclare town centre from 10am on the morning of the Twelfth.
