Overseas nurses recruited to fill NI shortfall
The Royal College of Nursing has said that the shortage of nurses in Northern Ireland hospitals has forced health officials to try to recruit staff from abroad.
Latest figures from the College revealed that one in every 16 nurses in the province is from outside the British Isles.
The shortage of nurses in the province has stemmed from a radical reduction of training places at Northern Ireland universities over recent years.
Intake numbers were recently reduced from 700 places to 425 at Queen's University.
Hospitals have already launched campaigns to bring foreign nurses to Northern Ireland from a number of foreign countries including Australia, the Philippines, and India.
The Mater Hospital in Belfast has already just recruited its first group of overseas nurses, which arrived from India on Sunday.
These latest figures follow recent news that there is also shortage of theatre nurses in Northern Ireland, which is leading to the cancellation of some operations for patients at short notice.
The figures, which showed there were 36 vacancies for full-time theatre nurses in the province at the end of June, has been seen by some as one of the reasons why Northern Ireland has the longest hospital waiting lists per capita in the UK.

Funding of £2.1 million is to be invested in education and training to boost the health service workforce, Health Minister Robin Swann has announced. Fewer beds in Northern Ireland hospitals
Northern Ireland’s hospitals now have 704 fewer beds than six years ago. This is according to DHSSPS figures published in response to a House of Commons question tabled by David Lidington MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
