Loaned putter drives McDowell on to golfing success
Northern Ireland golf rookie Graeme McDowell has won the Scandinavian Masters in only his fourth European event.
McDowell, who hails from Portrush, beat the likes of Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Sweden's Jesper Parnevik to win the £200,000 prize in Stockholm.
However it was South African Trevor Immelman who ran the Ulsterman closest, eventually finishing one shot behind the 23 year old.
Former University of Alabama graduate McDowell carded a final round of 67 to secure the title at 14 under par. However it was his course-breaking opening round of 64 that raised many eyebrows around the Kungsangen course.
McDowell's success was even more surprising given that he only had time for nine practice holes at Kungsangen before the tournament.
A second-round 73 followed by a 66 on Saturday kept him in contention before a final-round which included an eagle, five birdies and three bogies.
He also single-putted 12 holes after borrowing a putter from fellow countryman Darren Clarke on Saturday.
As well as his £200,000 prize, McDowell's win now means he has a valuable two-year tour exemption for the European Tour including the Open. (MB)

The University of Ulster is to confer an honorary doctorate on US Open champion and Ryder Cup hero, Graeme McDowell. The Portrush golfer who became the first Northern Ireland professional to capture a Major title since Fred Daly's British Open success at Hoylake in 1947 will receive a Doctor of Science (DSc) degree at a ceremony in the New Year.

UEFA Cup hopefuls Glentoran and Glenavon enter tonight’s second leg of their European qualifying ties with every chance of progressing through to the first round proper. Irish Cup winners Glentoran entertain Danish club FC Midtjylland in Belfast after a 1-1 aggregate score from the first leg game.
