Bullet sent to Lord Mayor in the post
The Lord Mayor of Belfast Alex Maskey has revealed that he received a death threat on the day he was due to attend an anti-sectarian peace rally at Belfast City Hall.
The Sinn Fein assembly member, who took up the mayoralty of Belfast on June 6, said that a 9mm bullet was received by his office through the post on Friday morning.
However, Mr Maskey said the threat would not deter him from representing Belfast's citizens, he added: "It is ironic on a day on which you are trying to establish a campaign of anti-sectarianism that you become a victim almost of more sectarianism.
"It is important to highlight the sectarian problem is still rampant with us but as far as I am concerned it certainly will not detract me from doing what I know what I have to do as a civic leader."
Last Friday's anti-sectarian rally, organised by the council, saw hundreds of people gather to protest at the growing tide of paramilitary violence, which culminated in the tragic murder of 19-year-old Catholic father of one, Gerard Lawlor on Sunday July 21.
