De Brun visits north Belfast children's home
Health minister Bairbre de Brún today visited a new children's home in north Belfast.
The Glandore Avenue home is a purpose-built eight-place home for children and young adults in the 12-17 age range who are in the care of North and West Belfast Health and Social Services Trust.
The home is one of the first new homes to open since the Report of Phase 1 of the Children Matter Task Force's Regional Plan for the Development of Residential Child Care – which was published in June last year.
During her visit, Ms de Brún said that the development of good residential homes was a key element in the provision of high quality personal social services for children and young people.
She added: "'Children Matter' is not merely a catch-phrase but a statement of our commitment to develop not only residential services, but a whole spectrum of services which will improve the health and well-being of our children and young people."
At Glandore, young people with limited mobility will have access to all the facilities within the home and one of the bedrooms is suitable for a young person who is wheelchair bound. Each resident of the home will have a separate bedroom.
The Report of Phase 1 of the Task Force's Regional Plan sets out proposals for developing 22 new facilities by the end of March 2003 which will provide 77 additional places and 70 places to replace present accommodation which is regarded as unsuitable or sub-standard.
Two of these new facilities opened in early 2001 but the Glandore Avenue home was the first one to open since the Phase 1 Report's publication.
The capital cost of implementing Phase 1 will be about £8.5 million with additional running costs of about £3 million.
The minister said that the planning and development of a number of other new homes in Belfast and other areas are well under way.

Family Threatened Out Of Their Home
A family has been ordered out of their home in Newry after a group of people gathered at their house. It is understood the incident occurred in the Pound Street area of the city on Thursday night when the mother was home with her four children. The PSNI said the mother, who is a young foreign national, was threatened during the incident.
