Double Road Tragedies

A man and woman are in a critical condition in hospital following a road accident involving two cars in Co Fermanagh.

The collision happened on the Castlederg Road near Ederney at approximately 3pm on Sunday and is the latest road smash of several - including two fatal incidents - over the weekend.

Another man and woman suffered injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening in the Fermanagh crash.

However, it has already been another tragic weekend on the roads of Northern Ireland.

A pensioner who died after being knocked down on Belfast's Shankill Road on Friday has been named as 84-year-old Norman Russell and a young motor-biker killed later the same night has also been identified.

Police have said the west Belfast accident happened near Conway Street shortly before 8am on Friday.

They said Mr Russell was taken to hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Afterwards, the police revealed that, since the beginning of the year, 10 pedestrians have been killed on Northern Ireland's roads, but since then the death toll has increased with news that a 'motor-cyclist' has died.

Thomas English from the Ballyduff estate in Newtownabbey - who was only 17-years-old - died following an accident involving two mopeds in County Antrim.

The teenager was travelling on the Carntall Road when the accident happened at about 10.15pm on Friday.

A second youth, who is 16, was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, last night, police are attending the scene of a four-car crash on the Knock-bound lane of the dual carriageway near Knockbreda High School in Belfast.

Two people were injured – but they are not thought to be too seriously hurt, as they were said not to be suffering life-threatening injuries.

Sunday night saw the inside lane of the carriageway blocked and police diverting traffic round the accident.
