Fine Follows Tragic Dairy Accident
A top dairy processor has been fined £100,000 after pleading guilty to two charges brought against them by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland for breaches of health and safety legislation.
Craigavon Crown Court heard that Glanbia Cheese Limited was charged in relation to a fatal accident that occurred in February 2006.
Matthew Dixon, a 22 year-old employee, received fatal injuries when he was crushed in an auger in the bottom of a hopper.
The two charges relate to the lack of a safe system of work and the inadequate prevention of access to dangerous parts of machinery.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said that companies need to ensure that personnel are properly trained, that work is properly planned and that measures are taken to prevent access to any part of dangerous machinery, in order to prevent further tragic work-related injuries and deaths, particularly during maintenance and cleaning activities.

North-South Fire Safety Week launched
A joint north-south Fire Safety Week has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade and the Republic of Ireland’s National Safety Council. ‘Fire, Our Community at Risk’ aims to raise public awareness of fire safety issues, and in particular, the higher risk to the very young and elderly people living alone.
