Software Jobs Created

There was both good news and bad news last week in Dublin with a computer software company announcing that it is to create more than 100 new jobs as part of a €29m investment in Dublin - but it was also revealed that nearly 20 jobs are to be lost elsewhere.

The good news comes from Business Objects - a firm that plans to open a research and development facility in the CityWest area of the Irish capital.

The new jobs will come on stream over a four-year period, with 50 of them expected to be filled before the end of the year.

Tanaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan officially announced the IDA-backed investment.

Meanwhile, 18 jobs are to be lost in Dublin following an announcement that Calor is closing its Dublin Port filling plant.

The company said it took the decision after a strategic review of its operations in Ireland, which revealed significant increases in the cost of transporting cylinders.

Calor's two other plants in both Cork and in Belfast will remain open.
