US-Ireland Business Summit to promote growth
Opportunities for sharing know-how and creating strategic alliances for Northern Ireland entrepreneurs and universities with US and Irish counterparts will top the agenda at the US-Ireland Business Summit in Washington next month.
Trade Minister Sir Reg Empey said the summit, which will be held from September 4-6, would be a unique business occasion.
He added: “Our objective at the summit will be to foster closer contact between industry and academia in the US and Northern Ireland and will support our overall strategy of promoting innovation and entrepreneurial activity to achieve faster rates of economic growth.
“We seek, in particular, to increase our knowledge of how the US fosters entrepreneurs and nimble companies driven by bright ideas and a clear strategic vision within a culture that values and rewards enterprise.
“The engagement of the universities in the summit is immensely important because knowledge generation and knowledge transfer are now the key drivers of the new economy.”
Keynote speakers at the conference, which has been endorsed by the Bush administration, include: US Secretary of Commerce Don Evans; US Secretary of Health and Human Sciences Tommy Thompson; US Director of Policy and Planning Richard Haass; Mary Harney, the Republic of Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment; and Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament.
Around 400 senior figures from industry, academia, and the three governments are also expected to take part in consultations over initiatives needed to expand business, particularly in high growth sectors such as ICT, biotechnology and financial services. (MB)
