Teen Rally Fan Dies
A young man from NI has been killed at the Donegal International Rally.
The teenage spectator, Richard O'Donnell, known locally as Richard McGrath, died after being hit by a competing car at Ballyarr outside Letterkenny on Saturday afternoon.
Mr O'Donnell was from Jefferson Court in Strabane. It is understood driver error was not to blame for his death.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened just before 3pm in Ballyarr, four miles from Letterkenny.
There were reports the spectator was standing in the road when a car came speeding over the crest of a hill.
Racing was immediately halted following the crash, and yesterday's racing was also cancelled by officials out of respect.
A spokesman for Donegal Motor Club said there are no indications at this stage that the crash was down to driver error.
He added: "We wish to extend our sympathies to the spectator's family and friends."
The accident happened on the second day of the three-day annual event, which pulls in 50,000 spectators.
In 2002, a photographer and a race marshal were killed in a freak crash when a rally car left the road and struck a crowd of spectators at Cloghan, six miles from Ballybofey.
Donegal men George Clarke, 22, and photographer, Clive Wilson died after a driver crashed off the road and ploughed into bystanders.
