Fate Of Westminster Vote Up To DUP

The DUP is holding all the aces today as PM Gordon Brown faces a critical House of Commons vote - which is also widely viewed as being a vote of confidence in his leadership.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson said his party would do what was best for the security of the United Kingdom.

Speaking on the BBC today he said "This is basically a security question - we have understood over 35 years in Northern Ireland the effect terrorism can have.

"If there is a compelling case to detain people for 42 days before they are charged we will go for it, if there is not then we won't."

Meanwhile, the SDLP's three MPs will vote against the plan and the Ulster Unionist's sole MP, Lady Silvia Hermon is under pressure to vote with for the proposal to allow terror suspects to be detained for 42 days without charge.

Wednesday's Commons vote on extending the maximum detention period from 28 days is expected to be very close, and DUP support could be crucial.

For the government to be defeated, some 33 Labour MPs need to rebel, assuming all other MPs - including all nine of the DUP - also vote against it.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has urged the DUP to defy ministers.
