NI News In Brief

Strabane Fire Risks Lives

Lives could easily have been lost overnight in an arson attack on an unoccupied house in Strabane. If it had spread to adjoining properties, firefighters said "lives were put at risk". The blaze in the terraced house in Drummond Court broke out in the early hours of Thursday. Two wheeled bins were put against a living room window and set alight, and a boiler shed was also set on fire. An attempt was also made to set the oil tank on fire.

Rat Alert In Poleglass

People living in the Colinvale area of Poleglass - near Lisburn - have said they have a problem with rat infestation - which they claim has become worse since resurfacing work was carried out by the NI Housing Executive (NIHE). Residents of the housing estate on the outskirts of west Belfast have called for more to be done to help them rid their neighbourhood of rats. An NIHE spokesperson said it was working to eradicate the problem.

Road Up!

The A6 Glenshane Road, Londonderry, is to undergo a major £600,000 resurfacing project, which is due to commence next week. The Altnagelvin Brae project, stretching from Millbrook Road to the Altnagelvin Hospital entrance, will begin on Monday 2 June and is expected to finish at the end of August. The scheme will also include 700 metres of shared footway and cycletrack and upgrading of the traffic signals at the Hospital entrance and Belt Road at a cost of £60,000.

It is expected the most difficult sections of the work will be undertaken during July and August, when traffic levels should be lower because of school holidays. The Roads Service will also implement suitable diversions and restrict site work to off peak hours.

Dump Protest

A PSNI spokesperson today said that between 70 and 80 people gathered to block a road leading from Coleraine Borough Council's offices to protest over a proposed new 'super-dump', one of three such facilities proposed for the site at Letterloan Road in Ringsend. The North West Regional Waste Management Group had invited community groups to a briefing on Wednesday night. The proposed dump would receive waste from seven council areas.
