Third Haul Of Cannabis Plants Recovered

Just days after a huge haul of cannabis plants were recovered by police in north Belfast - with those involved thought to be foreign nationals - six people of Chinese origin have been remanded in custody at Ballymena Magistrates Court - over two separate drugs incidents.

The men, five from China and one from Korea, were arrested in two police operations in Coleraine and Castlerock last week.

Before the court were Chang Yu, 17, Qaing Wang, 35, Xiao Jun Chen, 33 and Ming Li, 33, all originally from China. They were arrested by police on Wednesday afternoon following a raid on a house at Gransden Park, Coleraine.

They are charged with possessing cannabis and are also charged with possession with intent to supply.

The court heard that the plants appeared to have been harvested.

It was also told that a van stopped by police leaving the house had 20 black bin bags of cannabis leaves and heads inside.

The men were in remanded in custody to reappear at Coleraine Magistrates Court on 2 June.

The court heard that when police raided the detached dwelling house they recovered 350 cannabis plants as well as hydroponic growing equipment. Four bedrooms in the house had been converted into a cannabis factory with sophisticated lighting and ventilation systems.

The four accused stood in the dock, following proceedings as they were relayed by an interpreter, as Resident Magistrate Danny McGill remanded all four in custody to North Antrim Magistrate’s Court sitting at Coleraine on June 2.

The court also heard about a police raid at Liffock Park in Castlerock on Thursday afternoon.

Two men were arrested and another large quantity of cannabis recovered.

Xing Chen, 32, from China and Ryong Sun Kim, 49, from Korea were charged with cultivating cannabis, possessing cannabis, possessing cannabis with intent to supply and supplying cannabis to others.

A police officer said that 450 cannabis plants have been recovered during the search of the house, along with hydroponic growing equipment.

Both men were remanded in custody, again to Coleraine on June 2.
