Car Incident Injures Cops

While several police officers have been injured after their vehicles were involved in 'an operation' in south Belfast, it has also emerged that a Translink employee, a bus engineer, was attacked last night with a hammer - inflicting wounds that required 67 stitches.

Today's dramatic police took place near Dunmurry, and involved seven vehicles, five of them police cars.

The officers were attempting to box in and contain a driver who was allegedly acting erratically.

The police offices and another person caught up in the incident are understood to have minor injuries.

The PSNI said that one man has been arrested and that a follow-up operation is causing major traffic delays in the Dunmurry area as the main Lisburn Road remains cordoned off.

Meanwhile, the man who was attacked during a robbery at the Falls Road bus depot in West Belfast on Thursday night in recovering from his horrific wounds.

SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood said that his party is seeking an urgent meeting with Translink.

"It's essential that workers, especially on night shift, are properly protected in their workplace," he said.

"There's quite a significant number of engineers who work the night shift and they're making sure that buses are able to run efficiently and effectively through out the day," he added.

Six police officers hurt in disturbances
East Belfast has seen another night of violence that has left six police officers injured. Shortly before midnight police in the lower Newtownards Road area came under attack from large crowds and were subjected to sustained attack from mobs throwing bricks and petrol bombs.

Four Men Arrested For Dissident Activity
Four men have been arrested in Newtownabbey on suspicion of dissident republican activity. PSNI officers detained the men on Thursday evening aged 30,35 and 46. They are being questioned in Antrim police station.
