US-Backed Jobs Announced

As the big wheels rolled into town for the much-anticipated US-NI investment conference - attended by both the UK Prime Minister and the newly appointed Irish Taioseach, Brian Cowen, jobs are already being realised.

A US internet company is to establish a research development centre in Belfast.

Cybersource - which handles millions of pounds worth of online payments - announced it planned to recruit 56 software development professionals for the new facility.

The news comes as over 100 US executives representing approximately 80 companies arrived in the Province ahead of a three-day investment conference.

Economy Minister Nigel Dodds believes the announcement sends a positive message to conference delegates: "I am delighted to welcome the company to Northern Ireland and I hope that their endorsement of this region will encourage other companies from high-value growth sectors such as ICT, business services and financial services to consider Northern Ireland as an investment location," he said.

Bill McKiernan, Chairman of CyberSource, said: "We are delighted to expand our engineering operations into Northern Ireland.

"Our new research and development centre will be an integral part of CyberSource global operations as the demand for secure payment processing solutions continues to grow at a rapid rate worldwide."

Last year CyberSource processed more than 1.2 billion transactions valued at over £27 billion sterling (€34.1 million), a 57% increase on the previous year.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg, the global business and financial news provider has also opened a bureau in Belfast.

The bureau will be the company's third office in the United Kingdom. The news provider is already based in Edinburgh and London.
