Over 80 jobs to be shed in County Meath

County Meath is to see the loss of over 80 jobs following confirmation that Rennicks Plastics is to close its plant in Kilbride at the end of October.

A spokesperson for the company, which produces plastic mouldings for customers such as Ericsson, Volvo and Apple Computer, stated that the decision to close the Kilbride facility had come about due to a shrinking customer base which had been impacted upon by competition from lower cost economies.

However, the spokesperson went on to stress that another company at the site, Rennicks Signage, would be unaffected by the job losses and would continue to operate as normal.

SIPTU has reacted angrily to the decision, and has described the news as a "devastating blow" for the Kilbride community, which has already experienced numerous redundancies in recent times.

Kilbride Branch Secretary, Gerry Lynch, has called upon Tánaiste Mary Harney and other state agencies to make every effort to find a replacement industry to take the place of Rennicks Plastics before its closure in October.
