US-Ireland business summit opens in Washington
Industry leaders and politicians from Northern Ireland have arrived in Washington for the US-Ireland business summit.
The aim of the summit, which begins today, is to build economic relationships across the Atlantic.
The last such conference was hosted by former US President Bill Clinton in 1995. Representatives of some 50 companies in the province will attend the two-day conference which is also being attended by the Economy Minister Sir Reg Empey.
Speaking before his departure, Sir Reg said: “The Summit is providing an important opportunity for Northern Ireland to learn from American experience in nurturing enterprising business driven by bright ideas and a clear strategic vision and how best to reshape our culture into one that values and rewards entrepreneurs."
The Summit will be launched with a Congressional reception hosted by Senator Ted Kennedy and Republican Congressman Jim Walsh.
Keynote speakers at the conference, which has been endorsed by the Bush administration, include US Secretary of Commerce Don Evans; US Secretary of Health and Human Sciences Tommy Thompson; and the Republic of Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney TD.
