Hartland Point officially named at Harland and Wolff
The latest vessel to be constructed at Harland and Wolff was officially christened “Hartland Point” today.
The Belfast shipyard unveiled the name of the vessel in front of 150 invited guests.
The vessel is the first of two Roll on Roll off ferries under construction by the company for the AWSR Shipping Ltd as part of the Strategic Sealift Service for the UK Ministry of Defence.
Along with the invited guests, primary six children from Ben Madigan Preparatory School, St Therese of Lisieux Primary School and Comber Primary School joined in the celebrations as the band of the Police Service of Northern Ireland struck up “Congratulations” following the traditional christening with champagne and three long blasts of the ships horn.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bill Alexander, Chief Executive of Harland and Wolff Group PLC, confirmed that a second vessel for the Ministry of Defence, to be named Anvil Point, is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2003.
However, these last two vessels are all that remains on the order books of the shipyard which has struggled to attract shipping business for a number of years.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

Two Co Antrim primary schools are to close because of falling rolls. The Sinn Fein Education Minister, John O'Dowd, has approved a proposal to close Lourdes Primary School, Whitehead: "I have agreed to the closure [because of] a decline in enrolments in recent years [that] has given rise to concern.

A fire at a L'Derry primary school is believed to have been started deliberately. The fire at the Good Shepherd Primary School, in the Waterside area of the city, was reported shortly before 8pm on Wednesay night, 10 August.
