Robinson transport's road strategy from Antipides
Returning from a visit to Australia and New Zealand, Regional Development Minister Peter Robinson has said that the implementation of roads and public transport initiatives already in place in the two countries could result in savings of millions of pounds for the department (DRD).
Mr Robinson said that he has "brought back a number of ideas and innovations" that will improve roads and increase efficiency.
“We held detailed discussions on how to optimise the return on [the executive's £780 million Regional Transport Strategy] investment in relation to procurement practices and the small percentage savings which would arise from implementation of their initiatives would translate into millions of pounds. Even a one per cent saving of the planned expenditure would mean £78 million.
“We also learned valuable lessons particularly from the Australians on introducing innovative public transport systems which could help us target resources better as we strive to implement the RTS.”
Mr Robinson said he was impressed by initiatives that have been introduced to improve public transport patronage and to provide passengers with real time transportation information.
The Minister added: “Not only were we impressed by the activities of the Australians and New Zealanders, but they were also impressed with our approach to the Regional Development Strategy and the Regional Transportation Strategy. In fact, the state of Victoria is about to embark on a similar exercise and are keen to learn from our approach and experiences.”
