IRA Killer Back In Jail

A member of the IRA who had been released under the Good Friday Agreement has been sent back to jail, this time for attempted murder.

Robert Duffy, 36, from Old Bridge, Toberna, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Colin O'Neill by shooting him in the face with a shotgun in 2007.

Duffy was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for murdering company director John Gibson in his driveway in Belfast. Duffy told the court during his original trial that he had killed Mr Gibson for carrying out work for the RUC.

The Central Criminal Court heard father of two Duffy was drunk on the night in question and had gotten into a row with Mr O'Neill in the Emerald Bar on Church Street, Dundalk.

After being thrown out of the bar, Duffy returned with a shotgun, pointed it into the face of Mr O'Neill and fired at point blank range.

The Central Criminal Court convicted Duffy on the basis of DNA evidence, the first case of its kind in the North.
