Firefighters strike action looms after ballot

The Fire Brigades Union’s (FBU) National Conference has today voted unanimously to back a recommendation from its National Executive to ballot all 55,000 FBU members for a series of discontinuous strikes over pay.

The FBU is claiming a £30,000 wage for Professional Firefighters and Emergency Fire Control staff, with pay parity for Professional Firefighters working the retained duty system and a new formula linking future pay claims to workers in the Associate, Professional and Technical grouping.

The ballot process will start immediately which could mean that Green Goddesses will return to the streets of the UK by the end of October.

FBU General Secretary Andy Gilchrist, whilst moving the motion on behalf of the National Executive Council, said: “Professional Firefighters and Emergency Fire Control Staff are determined to end the tradition of low pay in the Fire Service.

"The public know our members are truly special people; whether they are at a house fire, road accident or train crash they are prepared to risk their lives to save others. This places them in a very unique and special place.

"All we are demanding is they get paid the going rate for the job, which is £30,000.”
