Weapon Man Banned From Town

A pub brawl that led police to discover nine different weapons in a nearby car was the subject of a High Court case this week.

William McDonagh, 23, was arrested after a brawl outside a pub in the Co Antrim town last weekend.

One man was treated for head injuries following the brawl between two rival groups.

Mr McDonagh has been charged with nine counts of possessing a weapon, grievous bodily harm with intent, and affray.

A crown lawyer said police found baseballs bats, a knife and a hammer in his car, and that CCTV footage showed him carrying a hurling stick.

She said: "Police believe tensions are high in Ballymena. There's a dispute going back a year between these parties."

A solicitor acting on behalf of Mr McDonagh said that he admitted having the hurling stick for self-defence, but claimed the other items were put in the car without his knowledge.

Granting bail, the judge told Mr McDonagh to stay with his family in Dungannon and keep out of Ballymena.
