Viral outbreak spreads to four hospitals
A stomach bug which led to the closure of two wards in Belfast City Hospital last month has returned, spreading to four hospitals in counties Antrim and Down.
The virus, known as small round structured virus (SRSV), is apparently responsible for severe stomach pains in around 70 patients and 11 staff. The worst affected hospital thus far is the Ulster Hospital where 38 patients have been struck down by the virus.
The area affected by the virus is extremely large compared to previous outbreaks, and patients in Ballymena have also shown SRSV symptoms. Braid Valley Hospital has registered 24 patients as suffering infection so far.
Elsewhere, two people are believed to have been infected at the Royal Victoria Hospital with nine being struck down at the City Hospital.
Whilst SRSV is a common complaint, the symptoms of which may last for a few days, it is not synonymous with Northern Irish hospitals. As last year, Monklands Hospital in Airdrie saw 27 patients and 16 staff suffer its effects.
As hospitals here move to contain the outbreaks, doctors in Belfast now say that the virus is "rampant".
