Man appears in court over pensioner stabbing

A Portadown man has appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a pensioner at his home in County Armagh.

Thirty-year-old William James Craven, from Union Street in the town, appeared before Craigavon Magistrates Court charged with attempting to murder the 70-year-old pensioner at his home in Glandore Terrace in the Brownstown area of Portadown on Saturday night.

When charged Mr Craven replied: "I never done it." However, he did confirm to the court that he had had a drink with the pensioner earlier in the evening but did not recall stabbing him. The defendant was remanded in custody.

The pensioner, who was found by his brother on Saturday evening with multiple stab wounds, is currently critically in hospital.
