Policing Targets Increase Against Budget Cuts Of £100m
The Policing Board has published its Policing Plan at its Belfast Headquarters outlining a range of new targets against a backdrop of the budget cuts.
The Plan sets 10 objectives, 18 performance indicators and 30 targets for the police to meet over the next year, including a commitment that fewer than 100,000 crimes are committed in 2010/2011, and reducing anti-social behavior.
The document also included a reinvigoration of the fight against drugs, out lining efforts for "frustrating and dismantling" drug supply crime gangs.
The document also included addressing hate crimes.
Speaking about targets included this year for the first time, Policing Board Chairman Sir Desmond said: "The Board has set a new target in respect of reducing the level of repeat victimisation of domestic abuse, which is an area of growing concern. There are also new targets around the new performance indicator of the percentage of time spent by Police Officers on beat and patrol duties.
"These include targets to increase the percentage of time on beat and patrol duties, and to ensure that Neighbourhood Officers work at least 80% of their duty hours on neighbourhood policing activities."
Chief Constable, Sir Hugh Orde, said: "As with all public services throughout Northern Ireland, we are faced with the reality of reducing resources.
"If we are to make society not only safer, but feel safer, we need to work closely with the community so that we can continue to provide the best possible policing service within the resources available."
